Do You Need a Bassinet?

9 January 2014

While a good-quality cot will last your baby for years, a bassinet may only be used for the first 9 months or less, and this is one of the main reasons that many expectant mothers feel that a bassinet is not necessary. Every situation is different and this decision will depend on your needs and your lifestyle, however there are many advantages of using a bassinet for the first few months of your little one's life.

The main advantage of using a bassinet is that its compact size makes them perfect for having baby sleep in your room for the first few months. Any parent will tell you that midnight feedings are hard enough but having to trek up down your house every night will definitely make it harder and disturb your sleep pattern even further. Having your baby in close proximity for the first few months can help make night time easier and may also make you feel more secure, knowing that your new baby is close by.

Another advantage of using a bassinet for the first few months is their greater versatility. Many bassinets come on wheels, they are usually light and they can often be folded down to a compact size, making bassinets a lot more flexible than a cot. While a cot stays in the one place, a bassinet can travel with you so no matter where you go your bub will always have a comfortable place to sleep.
